Common mistakes: “No To!”

10 Sep

What is wrong with these sentences?

  • She will to write an exam next week.
  • She should to study harder if she wants to pass.
  • If she fails, she may to repeat the course.

Did you notice that there should be no “to” after “will”, “should” and “may”? This is a common mistake among English learners, especially in Eastern Europe, because these words should be followed by the infinitive. And in English, the infinitive looks like “TO write”, right? Well, yes, but not after certain words.

So the correct sentences should be:

  • She will write an exam next week.
  • She should study harder if she wants to pass.
  • If she fails, she may repeat the course.
