“used to”

Have you ever been confused by sentences like “He never calls me like he used to.”?

“Used to” is a fixed expression that has nothing to do with the verb “to use”. It means that a situation existed in the past, but it doesn’t exist any more. For example,

1) “He used to work at the post office, but now he’s retired.”

2) “I used to drink coffee every morning, but now I drink vodka.”

In today’s cartoon, Hägar’s doctor tells him to stop doing everything that he did before…
