Today’s idiom: “to force the issue”

Have you ever been in an uncomfortable situation for a long time? Maybe you have a terrible boss, or a colleague who constantly annoys you? Quite often, when we are in a situation like this, we say nothing, and hope that the problem will go away by itself. But of course it won’t.

So you have a choice: continue to have the stress of waiting and hoping, or confront the problem openly – in other words, to speak to the other person about it. We call this “forcing the issue” – forcing the problem to come out, so that it can be solved. Of course there is always a risk when you “force the issue”. For example, your boss might fire you if you tell him what you think….
