A Christmas idiom: “like turkeys voting for Christmas”

20 Dec

Turkeys are large birds which are often eaten on Christmas Day in English-speaking countries.

So, if people are like turkeys voting for Christmas, it means that they accept a situation which will have very bad results for them.

Example: “If teachers agree to have even bigger classes, it would be like turkeys voting for Christmas.”
